I second all the comments re being thankful that we again have the benefits of your insights. Your explanation of Putin's response - or lack thereof - to Ukraine's Kursk incursion makes sense. As you note, we don't know exactly what Ukraine's objective is or whether they're likely to achieve it - all speculation in the media is just that: speculation. But it's helpful to understand why Putin can and is reacting the way he has so far. Your comparisons to earlier 'embarrassments' in different circumstances sheds light on how Putin thinks about these matters and why the Russian people continue to endure what they have decided they must.

Welcome back.

I think the blow against Putin's popularity is supposed to come from the need to mobilize more soldiers to push the Ukrainians out again or to use the conscripts. It is not going to be an option for Putin in the long run to just ignore the incursion.
