Please, please let the Europeans keep up with the forward motion on creating a reassurance force and leading the way on supporting Ukraine. To think that anything has really changed would be premature and foolhardy. Thank you for the summary of today's events!

Europe must continue to show backbone. It helps to prompt reasonable behavior from Trump .The latter must realize, or someone in his Cabinet must, that the hit to the military industrial complex will be vast if Europe moves ahead Australia is starting to make worried noises about the very expensive subs it has on order from the U.S. The concern is that the U.S. may just change its mind or make the subs operable only by Americans.

I am certain other countries are also worried about what Trump could do them changing his mind on a dime as he is prone to do. They must also see our national fabric being rent asunder.

I'm optimistic on at least one score, that Europe won't relax on defence. Even without Ukraine to consider, most Europeans have now worked out that the US can't be relied on. Moreover, the shift to rearmament has its own momentum, as it promises a route to recovery for European industry. Not the route Europeans might have desired, but it's the one Putin and Trump have forced on them

My reading of yesterday's events is that they benefited from Trump's absence, who retains his grudge against Zelensky for not framing Hunter Biden in 2020. Rubio is much more sympathetic to Ukraine and, unlike his boss, owes no allegiance to Putin - with an ocean and a continent between him and Trump, he could be more his own man. So whether the new concessions survive contact with Washington, let alone Moscow, remains to be seen: and of course, Europe must assume the worst. Rubio cannot go too far without antagonising Trump (I wouldn't bet much on his lasting the full term as SoS) but he may just be lining himself up as the post-Trump candidate to bring the GOP back to reality.

Yes but geopolitically it doesn't make sense to me.

I'm honestly not sure geopolitics play into any of the administration's moves. I learned a lot about DJT's thinking about all of this from this podcast: https://www.foreignaffairs.com/podcasts/what-does-trump-see-putin
